General Description of the Sony SVR2000:

The Sony SVR-2000 was the first TiVo produced by Sony, and debuted with the Philips HDR series. The SVR-2000 and the Philips HDR series units have identical features, and only vary in cosmetics, remote, and drive size.

Many of these units are still in use. They do suffer from a few prominent hardware issues, notably a modem that has a propensity to fail. TiVo enabled support for external modems as these problems began to surface, likely as a way to keep older units suffering from that problem in service.

These units are now old enough that many of the hard drives inside either fail or make enough noise that they need to be replaced for that reason. Due to limitations of the TiVo OS in this model, these units can realistically only use drives up to 160 GB in capacity; they can hold two drives. With the maximum drive capacities installed, these units can hold up to 344 hours of programming at Basic Quality.

Users of the Sony model are often reluctant to move to different TiVos since they've learned how to use the Sony TiVo remote, which differs significantly in layout from the TiVo peanut remotes.

Remote Info for the Sony Silver TiVo Remote:

This is the Sony remote for non-DirecTV TiVos. It looks almost identical to the remote for Sony DirecTV TiVos, but the two are not compatible with each other at all.
