General Description of the Philips HDR212:

The Philips HDR series was the first TiVo ever commerically produced. All of the HDR series units have identical features, and only vary in two areas: front faceplate, and drive size. Otherwise, the HDR series has identical features, remote, and connections.

Many of these units are still in use. They do suffer from a few prominent hardware issues, notably a modem that has a propensity to fail. TiVo enabled support for external modems as these problems began to surface, likely as a way to keep older units suffering from that problem in service.

These units are now old enough that many of the hard drives inside either fail or make enough noise that they need to be replaced for that reason. Due to limitations of the TiVo OS in this model, these units can realistically only use drives up to 160 GB in capacity; they can hold two drives. With the maximum drive capacities installed, these units can hold up to 344 hours of programming at Basic Quality.

The HDR212 is larger than the previous HDR112 due to the drive size (20 GB versus 13.6 GB in the HDR112). The design of the front faceplate was updated, but otherwise the unit was unchanged.

Remote Info for the Series1 Black TiVo Peanut Remote:
